Building the tree: Part 1 (Inspirations and Concept)

Building the tree.
Part 1
Inspirations and Concept

We wanted to build something unique, instead of a rock wall or pile of rocks.
After seeing 12x12 cube in nano reef, I was inspired to build a cube where you do not see any plumbing, pumps or cables. I wanted the tank to have 360 degree viewing. I also liked the bonsai tree aquascaping that I saw online. These two are my inspirations to build the tank I have right now.

My cube also had two holes in the center; one for return one for the overflow.

Since I was going to build a unique shape, I needed to be able to work with the rock for long periods of time, and did not want to buy live rock. I believe live rock come with their own set of complications. I bought the dry   live rock from a listing in craigslist.

The structure we wanted to build had to stand up by itself. I saw some people using pvc pipes to do some amazing aquascapes, especially arches. My initial goal was to build the structure with a pvc pipe and use the same pipe for return as well.

This way I would be able to not have any return pipes visible, the water would just come out of the tree.

This concept did not work as well as I thought, I needed holes around the pvc pipe to be able to attach the rocks with zip ties and also putting all the pressure on the bulk head did not seem like a smart move.
